Once upon a forest sliced
arrow streaked
from string pulled tight
arching bow
did launch death’s flight
hope was birthed
the will to fight
Once upon a forest sliced

Once in awhile
her smile
creeps on my face
and I remember
traces
of magnolia
from the scenter of the breakfast table
in a crystal vase
there for me
to drink orange juice,
no pulp,
and crunch down a darkened piece of wheat toast,
lightly buttered.
Once in awhile
I’m reminded
what a fool is,
yet still,
I smile.

I see you in the mist of another’s dream
twirling
dark hair swirling
a cigarette burning ‘tween two fingers
whiskey staining your thin ripped dress
bruised lips whispering scriptures distressed
I reach
but you can’t see from the south side of the mirror
through fear
and black streaked tears
raining down cheeks
tracing hard years
pretending to dance
all while dying
fading blue
on the south side of my reach
chained in the mist of another’s dream
I can see you
